Money No Enough 2

Remember the big blockbuster from Singapore - Money No Enough? Well, its back!

Synopsis
Set in modern day Singapore, 3 adult brothers lead their lives in a cash driven society.

Eldest brother, Yang Bao Hui (Henry Thia) is the responsible, caring but not rich and blur.

Second brother, Yang Bao Qiang (Jack Neo) is the successful businessman making monies from real estate. However, he is a big gambler in his business & take huge risks, plus he has a selfish wife.

Third brother, Yang Bao Huang (Mark Lee) is also a rather successful businessman, who has just started to taste some success. Problem is his business thrives on bad people both from his suppliers & customers. And he doesnt treat his wife well.

The three brothers are united by their aging mother who loves her children very much.

As the title goes, its about money - from having it, to not, and overcoming it.

Why You Should Watch This Movie
Because its down to earth and full of reality. Nearly everyone can feel for the characters in the movie if you are from Singapore, or even if in Malaysia. Either you are in the situation or you know someone close in it.

You get to see the real life of Singaporeans - from living in HDB flats and even in big bungalows. It is really very Singaporean (and the reason why many heartlanders love Jack Neos movies).

For fans of Singapores acclaimed director, Jack Neo, well this movie is close to his signature styles of very local content. And interestingly, its good to see talented Mark Lee playing the slightly less Ah Beng here.

Why Not
This movie is too real, and to one big extend is too dark. If you expect this to be a comedy where you are to laugh your hearts out, be warned for its most likely to give you the opposite effects.

And the selfish needs of people are shown here, much to which is overdone, though not necessarily unreal.

Conclusion & Rating
If you can get the perception that this is not really a full comedy (but yet with some jokes & humour in between... and lots of sad depressing moments), then this movie can be worth watching.

Since I moved this summer, Im doing my best to avoid purchasing anything that would take up additional space and/or mass in my house or, God forbid, need to be moved to a different house.  But when I found myself at Best Buy, I braved the Massachusetts sales tax to purchase a copy of The Cabin In the Woods Blu-Ray on the spot.
The Cabin In the Woods did pretty well at the box office when it was released last spring which is nice to see considering the dearth of crap released in the past few years under the veneer of "horror".  Cabin comes from Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon who had previously worked together on Buffy the Vampire Slayer  and Angel and for fans of the Whedon-verse, it really shows.  Much like those, this movie captures all of the fun of a classic horror film while still finding fresh ways to entertain its audience.  Performances are great all around, particularly Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins, two actors I dont associate with a horror film, and Fran Kranz who seems to be playing himself as loveable stoner.  Its nice to enjoy his spaz outs without the creepy rape-vibe that his similar role on Dollhouse always had.

These are actually some of the movies best moments.
Though the film starts with stupid college kids going to a creepy cabin and acting stupidly, this serves only as the starting point for what might be called a post-post-modern film.  When I originally saw Cabin in the theaters, I thought it was over about three times and was ecstatic that each time the movie kept going.  Even when I figured out the movies ultimate plot, I still loved how the presentation, regardless of whether I knew what would probably happen next.  If you love horror movies, this is for you.  If you hate horror movies, this is for you.  If you like clever movies this is for you.  If you like rehashed cliches, paradoxically, this is still for you.  If you only like the Saw films, you are terrible; I dont even think you should get to watch this movie or mingle with other members of society.

Save me, Thor!
I rarely watch the special features of DVDs, unless its Warwick Daviss commentary track on Willow, but may give the Drew Goddard/Joss Whedon commentary track at some point, if only to find out exactly why I should be scared of a "Kevin".  Im still trying to wrap my head around digital copies of films but this came with one of those which I suppose is nice.  I appreciate that these extras are increasingly expected and dont add much to the overall price.  I have no eye for film quality: it looks a lot like when I saw it in the movie theater!  In any case, if you consider yourself a horror movie afficianado, which I am (seriously, I got credits from an Ivy League school to watch horror movies), The Cabin In the Woods is an Amazing addition to your collection.

As a tablet PC user since the launch of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition in November 2002, Ive longed for a lightweight, portable and thin slate device that essentially functions as a digital notepad computer, and this is what I believe HP has delivered in the 500. Theres nothing new here, the Slate is just a vanilla Windows 7 Professional device with practically no 3rd party applications installed except Evernote and the camera software, but I think thats actually a good thing as it keeps the unit from being bogged down given its adequate but less-than-powerful Atom platform.

Lamborghini cars

Lamborghini was founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini Ellie a car collector, he criticized Ferrari Enzo for lack of performance in their cars, then Enzo angrily said, if you think the bad times because my car does not produce its own cas.  Ferruccio started with that in mind to produce their own cars, and give it a lamborghini emerged.
Ferruccio decided to settle in SantAgata Bologna and hired a number of renowned engineers to build their Lamborghini  cars, as was the case of Bizzarrini, Dallara and Stanzani.
In 1964 the first car was produced Lamborghini 350 GT model, which combined a chassis designed by Dallara with a V12 engine designed by Bizzarrini. The car was quite successful and was produced until 1968, after it was renovated in 1966.
In 1966 it launched the legendary Lamborghini Miura, designed by Bertone and Luigi also equipped with a powerful V12 engine. Also Lamborghini Miura has been a tremendous sales success, being produced until 1973.
However, in 1968 had been presented the Lamborghini Islero to replace the Lamborghini  400 GT which had emerged as the development of the 350GT. Also in 1968 appeared the Lamborghini Espada, the first car brand with a capacity for four people. Two years later the Lamborghini Islero was replaced by Lamborghini Jarama.
In 1972 Urraco enabled the Italian brand into the super-segment of small cars.
Also this year, Lamborghini sold 51 percent of its shares to a Swiss businessman, with the remaining 49 percent to be delivered to another Swiss in 1974.
In between, in 1973 the Lamborghini Miura was replaced by another model that also made history in the world of sport car characteristics, the Lamborghini Countach. This car had a very angular, aerodynamic design and was fitted with a powerful rear engine of 4000 cc and 12 cylinder V The car was produced with these features until 1988, when the engine started to have an engine displacement of 5000cc.
However, the company was for long in financial difficulties and in 1981 was sold to brothers Mimra, who revitalized the brand.

Because the final total war game is coming out tomorrow I thought I would do a special on the total war series. It will, sadly, be the last total war game as it was a trilogy, but dont worry, there is a Total Warrior trilogy to come!

Shogun Total War
The first Total War game was Shogun Total War. It was released 14/6/00. It was published by Activision. It was revolutionary, getting numerous awards and enticing many players. The game was set in Japan in the 16th century where the country was at war. Although the total war games have changed allot over the series here lies the foundation. The campaign plays like risk, you do not have complete control over your armys, you can just move them province to province. The graphics were good at the time but now are measly compared to Rome Total War.

Medieval Total War
The second installment, Medieval Total War, is considered by many (but not me) to be the best Total War game. Combining the greater graphics with some of the classic and simplistic features such as limited army control of armys on the campaign map. It is also most peoples favorite period of time. As advanced units are just starting but there is still lots of hand to hand combat. This game was released in 19/08/02 and also picked up a rake of awards. This game was also published by Activision and also had an expansion pack.

Rome Total War
The third and final installment was Rome Total War. Released 01/10/04 and also published by Activision. It gives you free control on the campaign map as well as revolutionizing the entire RTS market. Please see my review for full details.

Now you may be wondering why I keep mentioning who published the game. As you know, the Rome: Total War expansion pack is coming out tomorrow. Now you would expect it to be published by Activision. Oh no, it is published by *drum role* SEGA! I didnt even know Sega did publishing. They are also publishing the up coming Spartan: Total Warrior. Apparently, Sega out bid Activision for all of the up coming titles. It is isnt that surprising as Sega publishing probably have a nice new bank balance and saw where the money was. I dont care it is just interesting.

Barbarian Invasion
Although I have already done a preview for this game I have more information. I can confirm that the campaign map is bigger and will include Scotland. Also, if your commander has a night trait then you can choose whether you can attack at night in the campaign. Apart from it being dark, it means reinforcements cant join the battle unless their commander also has the night trait. This is great as before they could have 40 units and you 20. There is also, of course, a whole host of new traits and units and everything.

For all of you who are confused about my release date and what it says on shop.game.net, I have the same dilemma to. I will try to buy it tomorrow but I suspect that that is only in America :(. When it comes out I hereby proclaim it INTERNATIONAL TOTAL WAR DAY. Every year you must only play total war games, or buy a copy of the game on that day. When this day becomes famous remember THK123.

I look forward to playing BI with much enthusiasm. I will not review for ages and will be eating tablets for food as will be playing it constantly and will not be able to click quit. My only hope is that you can run it off the expansion pack disk too so I can play multi player across the network. I doubt it though.

Steam is the future of game distribution...but not yet. Steam Powered Games is rapidly changing the way games are bought and played on the PC, however, there are still a few issues that is going to stop it becoming truly main stream.

Unless you have been living in a hole for the past two years, you will probably have heard of Steam. It provides 3 basic functions: firstly, a gaming community system akin to Xbox live, complete with common friends list, in game tools (including a web browser and chat) and everything else you would expect. Secondly, it offers dedicated servers for large multi-player games such as Counter Strike. However, probably the most unique of its services is the ability to download (legally) entire games straight to your PC - the gaming equivalent to iTunes, if you will.

Judging by PC sales last year, the PC market is now completely dependant upon Steam for its survival. And believe me, I think it will survive. But Steam isnt quite ready to conquer the world. Here are the things that I think they need to resolve to go truly main stream.

1)Bandwidth - Steam side
For years, one of the biggest obstacles for online game distribution was that high speed broadband was not common, and even where it was, it wasnt anywhere near fast enough. This isnt true any more. As far as I am concerned, in the UK within the next 5 years, 5-10Mb broadband will be standard with 20-100 being fairly common. Which is fast enough.

The problem, would currently appear to be at Steams end. I have above average, 20Mb broadband, normally getting about 15mb/s. However, downloading a game from Steam, I will normally get no more than 1mb/s, usually a lot, lot less. Like 10-20Kb/s. I dont think Steam is capping the download. Instead I think their server cant deal with the downloads.

Obviously, this will improve over time. However, if they want to become mainstream, it has got to be as quick as walking in to town. A download cannot take 24 hours.

They are offering a solution which lightens the problem, called pre-loading. Basically, the user downloads the game before it comes out, but cant play it until it does. This is a good idea. Make sure every game is doing it. Make it so it is available as early as possible and make it possible for people to download it a little bit at a time whilst leading up to the release. If the download is available a month before the game comes out (as is usually possible) then every time people log in to Steam, it downloads what it can in the background, then the load will be shared out effectively across the 30 day period.

2)Piracy

Part of the reason that Steam is as successful as it is, is because virtually every game released, is released on to it. If you had to see if a title was available, you just would stop bothering. Steam has received loads of publisher support. Partly, this is due to their excellent anti-piracy techniques. As far as I am aware, Steam games are not easily hacked. When playing a Steam game, the game checks its legitimacy against the Steam servers. This is good, as piracy is a very real threat to PC games.

This is fine, until the connection with Steam is lost. It doesnt happen very often, but it does happen. If you are charging people to pay games, you have to let them play them, whenever they want to. Either guarantee 100% up-time on your servers or find a work around. Maybe less frequent checking, or allow it to fail a few times. I wouldnt mind, but it has happened twice in two days - Xbox Live doesnt fall over, ever. Well OK, maybe at Christmas, but it didnt stop you playing games, and it certainly doesnt happen on a daily basis.

Survival of the fittest

When playing Dawn of War 2, I have to manage my Steam overlay window, my Games for Windows Live (GFWL) dashboard, and, if I have any attention left, Dawn of War 2. I think that Steam needs to sign a deal with Microsoft or else they are going to start competing against each other. That is bad for Steam, as Steam will lose, simply because there will never be Steam on the Xbox, and the Xbox isnt going anywhere.

Steam need to agree with Microsoft to work together, as Microsoft could easily do what Steam does. Were Microsoft to sell games they would have far greater bandwidth with which to do it. Factor in that they could sell 360 games too, and they would be very attractive to sell with. I dont care how it is done, but make Steam needs to join Microsoft, because they cant beat them.

Pricing

Like iTunes, Steam needs to be cheaper than retail stores. For a good few years yet, people will have an attachment to physical objects. No one is going to pay more (or even the same) for a download. Particularly when it isnt even much more convenient with the 24 hour+ downloads. Game regularly under sells Steam. Steam needs to be doing much more dynamic pricing to keep the prices low. Admittedly, they do more than iTunes, but iTunes offers something that shops dont; £0.79 songs. Seeming as Steam cant do an equivalent (one level of a game just wouldnt work as people would view it as a demo), it needs to be cheaper in general.

I genuinely believe that the future of games is in downloading. Better deals can be granted to everyone and the community system is an excellent reward. However, I dont believe it will necessarily be Steam that wins. They are winning at the moment, but like I said, Microsoft could sweep in at any point.

What do you think? Do you buy all your games from Steam, or do you cling to the polythene wrapping? Do you think that broadband is ready for this? Post your remarks below, I would love to see some other opinions on this.

ABOUT THE GAME

Manhunt 2 is gone. There was one online store left selling Rockstar’s extraordinarily controversial, Adult rated game – Direct2Drive – which under new management has removed the title from its catalogue. As spotted by Gamersbook, the game disappeared shortly after Gamefly acquired the business. Which means it’s now completely impossible to buy on PC.

Interestingly, in a comment given to customer who asked where the game had gone, Direct2Drive attempted to imply that the removal was due to Rockstar:

“Unfortunately not all games are offered on Direct2Drive. Games offered are decided by the game’s publisher and can be removed at their disgression. We regret that we do not have any detailed information in regards to titles recently removed from our site. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you.”

However, when Gamersbook contacted Rockstar, the developer was surprised by the news and told the site they’d get back to them once things had been “straightened out”. A day later Rockstar reported back:

“There has been a change in ownership over at Direct2Drive. Gamefly, who is the new owner, does not approve of Adult Rated games, and refused to offer it on their Website now. And we also realize there is now no way for you to acquire this game for your desired platform (PC).”

They then went on to offer the correspondent a bag of R* goodies, which they suggested may contain a boxed copy of the game.

You may well not care about the availability of Manhunt 2. The game received mediocre reviews on all console formats, even somehow being okayed by Nintendo for release on Wii, back in 2007. This was a neutered version to give it an M rating, such that anywhere would stock it. The PC version was the uncut original that had angered so many previously. But there’s no PC review of the game I can find – even PC Gamer US seemed to ignore it on its eventual US-only PC release in 2009. This was a release, however, that was exclusive to Direct2Drive, then under the ownership of everybody’s favourite media mogul, Rupert Murdoch.

But the reason this is interesting, beyond the scope of one dodgy gross-em-up, is the completely unavailability of AO or “adult” rated games. Games deemed too adult for the US 17 rating have nowhere to go. It seems that nowhere is prepared to sell them, which asks the question: what happens? Will we see a day when adult videogames are sold in dodgy shops in dark alleys? Or will specialist sites appear, focusing on the games that certification forgot? Will no one ever dare make mainstream games truly for adults?

That’s the magnificent Keurig B70 Platinum. This is a personal coffee maker that is always ready to spit out a hot cup of premium coffee in one minute. It is amazing to be able to get a fresh cuppa within moments of having the thought and to have no cleanup. Just toss out the K-Cup and walk away. And it does it very quietly.

This model, by the way, came from a Canadian COSTCO and it came with four boxes of K-Cups plus a sampler pack. That’s a couple of months’ worth of coffee around here. I also picked up some Green Mountain hot chocolate and a couple of different packs of decaf for evening consumption. I’ve tried some real coffee (mornings only for me) like “Donut House” and “Dark Magic Extra Bold” and I must say that this is a really fun and convenient way of trying all sorts of different flavours. Oh yeah, this model also introduced an extra large tank of 72oz. Awesome.

Thanks so much, boys …

Ours wants instead to leave a country solidly behind …

Too many of our governments have driven our debt upwards … the current government of Stephen Harper inherited Paul Martin’s very competent surpluses and carried them forward for only two years before launching programs that see our debt curve going even more asymptotic than Dalton McGuinty’s curves for Ontario.

Note Harper’s curve when adjusted for current inflation. Not pretty …

image

image

Of course, the curves are mostly upwards except for the long and very fruitful period where Chretien and Martin were the Prime Ministers. And Martin was Chretien’s Minister of Finance for a lot of his time. In other words, you give the controls someone with vision and discipline like Paul Martin and you get sensible spending that maintains the status quo in real terms at least.

And even they could not stop the ravages of inflation, apparently. But running up even higher debt is not exactly the answer, and the policies of the current government are going to see us buy crappy jet fighters that we do not need and expand our prison system to support a war on drugs that we do not need.

In other words, Harper is bent on following a right wing red necked program that will see this country fall very far from its status as one of the best countries to live in. Of course, a few corporate lobbyists will get much richer and numerous government officials will probably land very softly later on, so who should complain?
